Umbwe Route

Umbwe Route

ROUTE OVERVIEW:

Umbwe is not as popular routs as the others, but it deserves attention. Back in days, it was observed as a difficult route because it is steeper in the first two days compare to other route. But the route is still suitable for many hikers. It begins on the southern side of the Mountain, joining Lemosho and Machame route on the third day before arriving the Barranco Wall. As log as few people use the root, the difference here is that the first two days there will be really few trekkers. On the third day, they converge and continue as a solo route via the southern circuit, the Barranco wall, then all the way to the summit. With Umbwe route trekkers may have two different itineraries option for 6 and 7 days, of which the 7 days trekking taken by beginners who do not have prior acclimatization. Moreover, this route offer’s an opportunity for the best Kilimanjaro awesome views.

And so difference between the Umbwe and Machame routes mainly lies in their first two days. This makes a bit of challenging for the initial two days then after it becomes more temperate. Therefor due to the above reasons we recommend you take 7 days itinerary while using this route for a better acclimatization where two nights at Barranco Camp are highly advice.

RECOMMENDATION:

UMBWE ROUTE LENGTH:

The route is nearly 52 km or 32 miles long, with the longest hike at the summit night. It’s one of the shortest routes to the summit. The most challenging route section is the final summit day, when you need to hike all the way to Uhuru Peak in the alpine desert zone. Though, no technical skills or special equipment extra than trekking poles will be required. The descent goes via the Mweka route.

The route essentially offers two itineraries of 6 and 7 days. We recommend the longer itinerary for everyone without prior acclimatization and hiking experience. Some operators offer (budge) option of a 5 days climb, of which, this is much harder with very low summit success rates.

SUMMIT SUCCESS RATE FOR UMBWE ROOT:

The summit success for this route always depends on how strong, fit and healthier the trekker with his or her experience in high altitude and steeper places in hiking is, as the most climbers via Umbwe are people who love to make tough record. This rout is compared to the expedition of 6 days that one might experience while on machame route. So most very strong trekkers who make it to the top despite of any challenge take this route. Our expert and well trained guides with first aid response certificate become the most supportive technically conducting medical check-up for our guest each day and are warmly supportive to any guest who needs help as can fee unwell due to high altitude. All of our climbing groups are occupied with oxygen tanks and extensive medical kit for safety and first response protocol. We value your summit success as here the most challenging thing becomes high altitude.
