FIRST DAY TREKKING:

The first day of all the Kilimanjaro trekking routes, you will be for the first time at an altitude that is already high, so we highly recommend you to take note to the following instructions from this point onward. It is highly advised to drink a lot of water as around 3 to 4 liters little by little every day. To help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness, consider using a preventive measure like a high-altitude aid medicine. Most climbers take such pills in the morning, before they begin their ascent, to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. The guides will provide more details together with your itinerary information. We also recommend consulting your doctor prior your trip to discuss any potential health concerns like allergies.

During the night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization due to high altitude, because of a reduction in your breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and experience a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.

ACCLIMATIZATION HIKE

The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.

PLEASE NOTE THAT: If you book a private expedition and need more time to adjust to the altitude, it’s possible to add an extra rest day at any of the camps along the route. Please note that extending the expedition incurs an additional cost, covering extra park fees, staff wages, and related expenses. Nevertheless, this adjustment can enhance your likelihood of a successful summit especially if you feel that the classic itinerary might be too difficult.

Trekking Tips

Mountain Trekking Tips: Your Ultimate Guide to a Successful Climb:

Mountain trekking offers an exhilarating and challenging experience, whether you’re scaling the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, or any other stunning mountain range. To ensure that your trek is safe, enjoyable, and successful, here are essential tips to help you prepare for your mountain adventure.

1. Prepare Physically

Mountain trekking requires physical stamina, so it’s important to get in shape before your trek. Focus on:

  • Cardio Training: Hike on inclines, use the stair machine, or go for long walks to build endurance.

  • Strength Training: Strengthen your legs, core, and upper body to carry your gear and maintain stability.

  • Practice on Elevation: If possible, train in high-altitude areas to acclimatize your body to the reduced oxygen levels.

2. Choose the Right Gear

Packing the right gear is crucial for your safety and comfort during the trek. Here’s a list of essentials:

  • Proper Footwear: High-quality hiking boots with good ankle support are necessary for mountain treks. Make sure they’re broken in before the trek.

  • Clothing: Layer your clothing to manage fluctuating temperatures. Include moisture-wicking base layers, warm insulating layers, and a waterproof jacket.

  • Backpack: A comfortable backpack with enough room for your essentials (water, snacks, first aid, and camera) is essential.

  • Sleeping Bag: A high-quality sleeping bag rated for the temperatures you’ll encounter at the summit is important.

  • Trekking Poles: Useful for balance and reducing strain on your knees, especially during descents.

3. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is key, especially at higher altitudes where dehydration can occur faster. Drink plenty of water throughout your trek. It’s advisable to carry a hydration system, like a Camelbak, so you can drink easily without stopping.

4. Acclimatize Slowly

Altitude sickness is a serious risk when trekking at higher altitudes. The best way to prevent altitude sickness is by acclimatizing.

  • Take Rest Days: Schedule rest days in your itinerary to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Climb High, Sleep Low: This technique helps your body acclimatize to the thin air.

  • Listen to Your Body: If you feel symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness, descend immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

5. Bring the Right Snacks

Energy-packed snacks are crucial for maintaining energy levels. Bring lightweight, high-calorie snacks such as:

  • Energy bars

  • Trail mix with nuts and dried fruits

  • Chocolate or candy for quick energy boosts

  • Electrolyte tablets to replenish salts lost through sweat

6. Pack for Comfort

Beyond the essentials, packing a few comfort items can make your trek more enjoyable:

  • Sunscreen: UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes. Use a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin.

  • Lip Balm: Protect your lips from the wind and sun with a moisturizing lip balm.

  • Earplugs and an Eye Mask: These can help you sleep better in shared accommodation (e.g., huts or tents) or at higher altitudes.

  • Toiletries: Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are handy for staying clean.

7. Respect the Weather

Weather conditions can change rapidly in mountainous regions. Check the forecast before your trip, but always be prepared for:

  • Cold: Even in tropical regions, mountain summits can be freezing.

  • Rain: Waterproof gear and layered clothing are essential to staying dry.

  • Wind: Winds at higher altitudes can be harsh, so ensure you have windproof gear.

8. Take it Slow

Mountain trekking isn’t a race. Pace yourself and take regular breaks to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. Going too fast can increase your chances of exhaustion or altitude sickness. It’s always better to take your time and reach the summit feeling strong.

9. Follow the Trail and Guide

Always stick to the designated trails to avoid getting lost or damaging fragile ecosystems. Your guide is an expert and will lead you on the safest route while providing valuable insights about the local culture, wildlife, and terrain.

10. Be Mindful of the Environment

Mountain ecosystems are fragile. Help preserve them by following the Leave No Trace principles:

  • Avoid littering.

  • Use established paths and campsites.

  • Don’t disturb wildlife or damage plants.

11. Mental Preparation

Mountain trekking can be mentally challenging. There will be moments when you feel fatigued or discouraged, but keep your focus on the reward—the summit. Remind yourself why you started the trek and keep a positive mindset. A strong mental attitude is often what separates a successful trek from one that is abandoned halfway.

12. Know the Signs of Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness can affect anyone, no matter how fit you are. Be aware of the symptoms, which include:

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Loss of appetite

If you experience these symptoms, inform your guide immediately and descend to a lower elevation.

13. Have a Plan for Emergencies

While mountain trekking is safe with proper preparation, it’s always wise to be ready for the unexpected. Make sure your guide is trained in first aid and that the trekking company has an emergency evacuation plan in place. Always carry a basic first aid kit with you.
